Competition for significant social and environmental projects in the mining and metallurgical industry of Russia

We are living through tectonic changes accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic. The real threat of irreversible climate change requires an urgent reduction in environmental pollution. The development of “Industry 4.0” technologies is making a revolution before our eyes, changing the role and place of humans in industrial production.

The future of many mining and metallurgical companies directly depends on how effectively they implement “green” technologies to reduce ecological footprint and what culture they nurture to develop a sustainable and socially accepted business.

MineESG competition will showcase the unique experiences of mining and metallurgical companies in Environmental, Social, and Governance development in Russia.

Competition objectives

To present projects implemented by mining and metallurgical companies operating in Russia aimed at reducing negative impact on the environment, supporting the socio-economic development and implementing the best world standards of sustainable development and rational use of natural resources.

To evaluate and benchmark the effectiveness of technologies and management methods for solving social and environmental issues.

To stimulate the exchange of ideas on sustainable development of mining and metals industry at the national and international levels.

To prepare recommendations and proposals for improving the regulatory and organisational structure of ESG in Russia based on practical challenges and experiences.

How is the competition organised?

Nominations

The competition is organised in two categories:

Social project of the year

Nomination definition: major projects implemented in 2019-2021 to address social issues in the mining and metallurgical industry in Russia which made significant positive impact on the sustainable development of enterprises and communities.

Evaluation criteria: information disclosure and transparency; contribution to social development at the company and regional level; innovation and efficiency.

Examples: construction or renovation of infrastructure to create new jobs and stimulate economic activity; charity events; social inclusivity programs; professional development programs; social engagement programs, etc.

Environmental project of the year

Nomination definition: projects implemented between 2019-2021 which contributed to a significant reduction of the environmental footprint and ensured ecological safety and biodiversity.

Criteria for evaluation: information transparency; contribution to the development of best environmental practices at the company and regional level; innovation and efficiency.

Project examples: introduction of highly efficient environmentally friendly technologies e.g., energy-saving and renewables; significant improvement of environmental performance; development of waste management systems; conservation of water, forest, and land resources; development of nature reserve systems, etc.

Who can participate

Mining and metallurgical enterprises, local government bodies, universities and solution providers who have implemented projects in the fields of environmental safety and social development in the Russian mining industry.

Participation in the competition is free but does not include admission to fee-paying events of the MINEX Russia Forum.

Participation rules and terms

Applications must be submitted by 1 August. Projects submitted for the competition will be evaluated by an independent jury. Accepted projects will be announced on the forum website.

Nominees will also be invited to present their projects in person or remotely at the MINEX Russia Forum in Moscow on 6 and 7 October 2021.

The winners will be determined by the “audience sympathy votes” and the decision of the jury. The winners will be awarded diplomas and gifts from the competition partners at the Forum’s closing ceremony.

A press release announcing the winning projects will be published on the Forum website and disseminated to accredited media.
